AG 1: Late phenomena in first language acquisition

Esther Rinke (Goethe-Universität Frankfurt); Esther Ruigendijk (Universität Oldenburg)

There is a consensus that children are well equipped for the task of language acquisition, enabling them to master many developmental milestones in their first language(s) by the age of 3 or 4. The quest to explain this fascinating capacity of the human mind has led to a research focus on early acquisition (Guasti 2016). However, the view that “by age 3 or 4, children have effectively become adults” (Crain/Thornton 2012) is at odds with empirical findings (see Schulz 2007; Tolchinsky/Berman 2023). This workshop focuses on the question of which linguistic phenomena are acquired late in first language acquisition and why.
Studies on late language acquisition remain limited, as phenomena are often studied in isolation, and explanations have focused narrowly on specific linguistic or language-external factors, leaving an integrative perspective largely unexplored. There is a wealth of studies addressing the late acquisition of object relative clauses across many languages (Friedmann et al. 2009; Sauerland et al. 2016; Sanfelici/Schulz 2021), while less is known about other late acquired phenomena in different languages.
Contributing to a larger picture of late acquisition, this workshop invites contributions on late phenomena in various linguistic domains and different first languages, which address a variety of linguistic and extra-linguistic factors (e.g. cognitive maturity, input). The workshop will focus on morphological, syntactic, and semantic phenomena as well as phenomena at the syntax/discourse interface. Late acquisition is defined as age 5 or older. The overall aim of this workshop is to reconcile different hypotheses in order to better capture the relationship between the set of late phenomena and the range of explanations. In this way, the workshop will contribute to deriving predictions for lateness in language acquisition and, in addition, to theoretical accounts of linguistic complexity in general. It will form a basis for future collaborative research projects investigating late acquired linguistic phenomena and how they interact with the development of cognition. We invite contributions addressing the following aspects:
1. The interaction of late acquisition and the development of cognitive abilities
2. The role of input for late acquisition
3. The relation between linguistic complexity and late acquisition

Hannah Seemann; Jennifer Hüge; Fabian Schlotterbeck (alle Universität Tübingen)

Newer results on modal particles (MPs) show that they have a large variety of functions that go beyond their Common Ground-managing function in an utterance. MPs have been shown to interact with gestural information, Perspectivization, and coherence relations (e.g., Seemann, 2025 and references therein). Their contribution of not at-issue meaning has been argued to impose additional use-conditions and processing costs (e.g., Hinterwimmer & Ebert, 2018; Czypionka et al., 2025, a.m.o). At the same time, there are open questions regarding the links between these various observed functions and how they affect processing of utterances containing a modal particle.
Harnessing state-of-the-art semantic and pragmatic theory in combination with current computational modeling techniques and sophisticated experimental methods allows us to use MPs as a lens on the interactions between all the mentioned dimensions at the heart of rich discourse phenomena. Thus, the proposed workshop aims at bringing together researchers working on theoretical and empirical questions related to MPs. Potential topics to be discussed include:
How does the ‘meaning’ of MPs interact with their observed functions in discourse?
Which of their functions are part of their core meaning, and which are epiphenomena emerging from interactions with other aspects?
Are the functions observed for MPs stable across languages?
Which methods are suitable for monitoring MP meaning and processing?

AG 3: Clitic and agreement markers across languages: from Balkan to Bantu and Beyond

Ekaterina Levina; Adina Camelia Bleotu (beide Universität Wien)

Clitic pronouns and agreement markers are traditionally treated as distinct elements of grammar: clitics as (deficient) pronouns, agreement as a purely morphological reflex of syntactic relations. However, a growing body of work has pointed to systematic similarities between them, raising the question of whether this distinction is theoretically justified (Jaeggli 1982; Borer 1984; Sportiche 1996; Roberts 2010; Kramer 2012; Zeller 2015; Dierks, Ranero & Paster 2014).
Cross-linguistically, phenomena such as clitic doubling in Balkan and Romance languages and object agreement in languages such as Hungarian or Bantu often show comparable distributional and interpretive effects, including sensitivity to definiteness, specificity, animacy, and information structure (e.g. Kallulli 2000; Den Dikken 2006; Zeller 2008; Coppock & Wechsler 2012; Baker & Kramer 2018; Angelopoulos 2019). At the same time, these systems differ considerably in their morphophonological realization and apparent optionality. This raises a central question: should clitics and agreement markers be analyzed as distinct grammatical objects, or do they instantiate a single underlying mechanism with different surface realizations?
The AG aims to clarify whether a unified analysis of clitics and agreement is possible and what this would imply for the architecture of grammar. It brings together research on clitics, agreement, and related phenomena across languages. We welcome contributions that engage with formal approaches in syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, including theoretical analyses, empirical case studies, and experimental investigations within formal approaches in syntax, semantics, and pragmatics.

AG 4: At-issueness under the microscope: a category between a descriptive term, analytical tool and theoretical concept

Maik Thalmann; Daniel Gutzmann (beide Ruhr-Universität Bochum)

At-issueness as a category of linguistic description reflects the intuition that the meaning of an utterance can be partitioned into foregrounded (at-issue) and backgrounded (non-at-issue) contents. To date, the at-issue/non-at-issue divide has been fruitfully linked to the analysis of projection, anaphoric potential and the well-formedness of answers. However, it remains an open question whether this distinction reflects a unified underlying notion or an umbrella term covering several distinct phenomena. Even though research has established a range of well-documented conventional sources of non-at-issue content—e.g., non-restrictive relative clauses, presuppositions, and expressives—it has also un-covered a variety of factors that may overrule an expression’s conventional (non-)at-issue status. For example, clause-final non-restrictive relative clauses are easier to interpret as contributing at-issue content than clause-medial ones. Similarly, narrow focus marking on the triggering expression may turn an ordinarily non-at-issue presupposition into part of the assertive content. Finally, some opera-tors have been argued to shift certain non-at-issue meanings into the at-issue dimension. Thus, rather than being purely conventional and monolithic, at-issueness status appears to be a discourse-sensitive, multicausal phenomenon that tracks a variety of properties from syntax, semantics and pragmatics.
In an attempt to unify these factors and to connect at-issueness, as a determinant of propositional anaphora, to research into individual discourse anaphora, Gutzmann (2023) has recently proposed to reduce at-issueness to prominence (von Heusinger & Schumacher 2019). In this workshop, we ask whether reduction attempts like this can be sufficient to explain the full range of at-issueness phenomena or whether, to the contrary, at-issueness should be decomposed into semi-independent categories (cf. Koev 2018). In pursuit of this goal, we invite contributions that present new empirical observa-tions about (non-)at-issueness, novel analyses of phenomena discussed under this label, or theoretical approaches to (non-)at-issueness, addressing, among others, the following sub-questions:

What is the relationship between at-issueness and discourse prominence, and can prominence dif-ferences account for cases of contextually-shifted at-issueness?

How does at-issueness(/prominence) constrain the well-formedness of answers to questions?

Are the effects of at-issueness—projection, anaphoric potential, answerhood—dissociable?

What determines whether at-issueness is fixed conventionally or contextually overridden?

How can at-issueness be reliably diagnosed across different empirical domains?

AG 5: Non-Canonical Questions under the Microscope

Ebrar Beşinci; Timo Buchholz; James Griffiths; Paula Menéndez Benito; Ilaria Frana (alle Universität Tübingen)

Non-canonical questions (NCQs) override the default settings associated with ordinary information-seeking questions (Farkas to appear). Canonical questions present an open issue, signal that the speaker does not know how to resolve it, and that she assumes that the addressee can (and will) provide an answer. Instead, rhetorical questions (Is the Pope Catholic?) can raise already solved issues. Biased questions (Aren’t you hungry?) signal that the speaker favors one of the answers and is thus not fully ignorant. Conjectural questions (Wo wohl der Schlüssel ist?) override the addressee’s knowledge assumption. Probing questions (He does WHAT for a living?) heighten the expectation that the addressee can provide an informative answer.
In recent years, a substantial body of work on NCQs has emerged (see, e.g., Eckardt et al to appear, Trotzke 2023). Some of the key issues addressed in this research are:

How should the discourse properties of NCQs be modelled?

How do the formal (morphosyntax, prosody) properties of NCQs impact on their pragmatic profile?

How do NCQs interact with other linguistic devices that switch default conversational parameters (e.g., evidential or mirative markers)?

This AG aims to bring together researchers that investigate these and related issues. A focal point of the AG will be micro-variation in the form-function correspondence, also across languages, dialects, and registers. This ‘microscopic’ perspective is crucial for developing fine-grained responses to the questions in (1-3). For instance, the syntactic position of the verb of wohl questions has been shown to subtly impact their discourse effect (Eck-ardt 2020). While (1a) requests the addressee to provide an informed guess, its verb-final counterpart in (1b) expresses curiosity but does not request an answer.

(1) a. Wer bekommt wohl den Job? b. Wer wohl den Job bekommt?

„Who will get the job?“ „I wonder, who will get the job?“ (Eckardt, 2020:31)

We invite contributions investigating how such small variations in form may lead to different pragmatic uses, and how different methodologies can bring out this variation. We are especially interested in results arising from linguistic varieties that are underrepresented in the previous literature. Contributions from doctoral students and early career researchers are particularly welcome.

AG 6: Zooming in: Physiological aspects of language across the lifespan

Elina Rubertus; Šárka Kadavá; Susanne Fuchs (alle Leibniz-ZAS Berlin)

Whether spoken or signed, linguistic behaviour reflects physiological properties of the body. Previous research has shown that bodily architecture – including vocal tract morphology and muscle activation strength – as well as interacting physiological processes such as breathing, motion, and posture and their timing relative to one another, shape the way we produce language (Blasi et al. 2019; Fuchs and Rochet-Capellan 2021; Pouw et al. 2025). Importantly, the body continues to change nonlinearly across the entire lifespan, and language production develops, adapts, and reorganizes in turn, reflecting multidimensional interactions between motor, physiological, and cognitive processes. Yet these interactions between language production and its physical underpinnings have been largely overlooked in major linguistic theories. This workshop aims to zoom in on the body itself, exploring how physiological changes across the lifespan shape multimodal linguistic behaviour. We invite contributions on the following topics, as well as related areas:

Physiological changes and their effects on spoken and signed language

Language adaptation and reorganization within specific age groups

Intra- and inter-individual linguistic variability attributable to physiology

Compensatory strategies and motor equivalence: how different bodily configurations achieve similar linguistic targets

Given the methodological and practical challenges inherent in studying bodily mechanisms, this workshop brings together researchers from diverse fields – including phonetics, phonology, psycholinguistics, speech acquisition, and aging – to foster cross-disciplinary exchange.

AG 7: Learning sign languages across the lifespan – diverse trajectories in first and second language learning

Annika Schiefner (Universität Amsterdam); Door Spruijt (Universität Köln)

Sign languages and the diverse paths to their acquisition offer a unique opportunity to gain insight into linguistic theory and human cognition. Structurally, the visual-gestural modality has different affordances and demands than the oral-aural modality and these have implications for linguistic theory (Perniss 2018). Socially, signer demographics are extremely varied due to factors such as (familial) hearing status, language ideology, and access to a sign language community (De Meulder 2019). Just these two aspects illustrate how sign acquisition trajectories may vastly differ from speech acquisition pathways and how the general conversation on language learning would benefit from their inclusion. However, our understanding of the developmental pathways taken in scenarios of sign language learning remains limited. Particularly, research into sign languages as second languages is sparse (Schönström 2021), despite most signers acquiring a sign language as such (De Meulder 2019).
Therefore, this workshop aims to bring together researchers working on sign language acquisition in children and adults, contributing a range of perspectives on the diverse learning contexts in which sign languages are learned by diverse populations. This entails research on acquisition patterns of specific linguistic features and structures, as well as observations regarding language transmission, attitudinal and motivational factors, and broader observations of language learning over time. Contributions that bridge and compare different contexts or areas of linguistic development are particularly welcome.

Under (1)’s MS-reading, which is crucially non-exclusive, as little as the thought of food makes the speaker hungry, not to mention more direct exposure to food. The compositional semantics of MS continues to be under debate (Grosz 2012, Coppock & {Beaver, Lindahl} 2014, Liu 2016, 2017, Panizza & Sudo 2020, Wimmer 2022). A second issue is the syntactic disentanglement of ScalFocPs across languages. Chinese exhibits heavy particle doubling (Hole 2004, 2006, 2017, 2023, Sun 2021, Liao & Jheng 2025): the proposition that Old Wang drank tea and nothing else can be expressed as ‘OW only1 teaF only2 drink’. It is not settled whether the two ONLYs just syntactically agree with each other, or whether each makes a semantic contribution of its own, e.g. an exclusive vs. a scalar contribution (Hole 2015, 2017).
Our workshop aims to bring together theoretical and empirical approaches to the above issues and beyond. We welcome contributions addressing puzzles including, but not limited to, the following:

the building blocks of scalarity: e.g., the syntactic distribution and compositional interaction of different operators to yield an overall ScalFocP meaning

empirical approaches to scalarity: psycholinguistics, fieldwork (especially) on understudied languages

the compositional semantics of MS-constructions

the contribution of ScalFocPs to various constructions, including conditionals.

Maryam Mohammadi; Daniel Aremu; Alon Fishman (alle Universität Bielefeld)

Background & Objectives: Information Structure (IS) is a broad domain of linguistic inquiry, addressing how speakers organize and present information in discourse. Crucially, languages employ a wide range of strategies across (morpho)syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and prosody to package information within discourse (F´ery and Krifka, 2008). Despite a substantial and growing body of research, several fundamental questions remain open, for instance, the extent to which IS (e.g., focus) is involved and interacts with syntax (e.g., movement), particularly in relation to fixed versus free word order languages (e.g., Yoruba and Farsi, respectively); the possibility of subsuming certain IS categories (e.g., topic and focus) under a single analysis (e.g., alternative semantics or QUD approach); and the development of a unified analysis for prosodic and morphosyntactic focus marking languages (cf. Assmann et al., 2023). Such open issues give rise to the need to investi-gate typologically diverse languages, as such research allows scholars to test theoretical assumptions and refine existing models of IS (e.g., Matthewson, 2025). The central goal of this workshop is to challenge and refine existing IS theories based on empirically understudied languages and phenomena.
Scope & Potential Topics: We invite contributions from all areas of linguistics that bring new empirical evidence to bear on IS issues such as the ones mentioned above. Relevant topics include, but are not limited to: (contrastive) focus marking and topic constructions, the encoding of given and new information, discourse particles, word or-der variation and prosodic prominence. We particularly welcome contributions that en-gage with cross-linguistic data, investigate underdocumented languages or understudied phenomena, employ experimental, corpus-based, or fieldwork-driven methods, and/or develop theoretical approaches grounded in empirical findings.
By bringing together researchers working on diverse languages and employing different methodological approaches, this workshop aims to provide a venue for sharing novel findings and advancing our understanding of how fine-grained cross-linguistic data can inform larger theoretical questions with respect to IS categories. It will provide a plat-form for identifying common patterns and diverse mechanisms, bringing up idiosyncratic phenomena, rethinking unresolved theoretical issues, and fostering collaborative research on languages that remain understudied in the literature.

Emir Berber; Rebecca Jarvis; Francesca Ziegler; Mariia Privizentseva; Stanislao Stompí (alle Universität Potsdam)

One of the central goals of syntactic typology is to reduce complex linguistic phenomena—and the often fine-grained variation they exhibit across languages—to a set of simpler underlying mechanisms. This enterprise involves deriving a wide range of syntactic constructions from con-strained sets of features or other syntactic primitives that can combine in different constellations across languages. In this workshop, we zoom in on these primitives and ask two interrelated questions: (i) To what extent are more complex phenomena in a given language determined by the presence of simpler ones, or by specific combinations of these elements? (ii) How much cross-linguistic variation can be accounted for through the parametrization of simpler elements? On the one hand, we invite work on what particular combinations of features underlie larger syntactic phenomena. This line of argumentation is exemplified by Sichel’s (2018) claim that exceptional non-island-sensitivity of some Hebrew relative clauses results from a conspiracy of features, namely when the clause both exhibits a particular derivational structure and occupies a particular position in the sentence. A similarly-flavored, long-standing debate concerns whether the availability of a correlative structure in a language can be predicted by its word order profile. On the other hand, we encourage work on how a small number of primitives can expand parametrically to capture a range of syntactic variation in a factorial typology. Such an approach to a type of verbal inflection in the Algonquian language family is pursued by Oxford (2022), who argues that all and only the twelve patterns of inverse agreement attested in these languages can be captured through a parametrization of two agreement-related syntactic features. Similarly, Lohninger (2023) identifies subtypes of so-called “mixed” A/A’-behavior across languages and proposes that each can be represented through a constrained combination of syntactic features.
Through such investigations, this workshop aims to shed new light on the small building blocks that form the basis of complex syntactic phenomena.

Vera Hohaus; Simone De Cia (beide University of Manchester)

“Natural languages offer a variety of means not only to describe our world by making a claim with specific truth conditions, but also to address the validity of the claim and highlight its truth itself.” (Müller 2024: 577) There is however only limited research on the means that languages other than German and English use for such truth highlighting, or verum marking (most notably, Gutzmann et al. 2020, Kerr & van der Wal 2023, De Cia 2025). From this research, there already emerges a variety of grammatical strategies for verum that may not necessarily lend themselves to a unified compositional semantic analysis. The goal of this workshop is therefore to provide a forum for the discussion of the following three research questions at the interfaces: First, what are the grammatical means for marking verum across and within a language? Second, what interpretative strategies underly them compositionally? Third, how can we best address these theoretical questions in the fieldwork setting? We invite contributions based on data from original fieldwork on under-researched and under-represented languages, to inform a formal typology of verum.

AG 12: (Kurz-AG) Was Kopula? Atypical copular constructions

Marianna Lohmann; Barbara Schlücker (beide Freie Universität Berlin)

Copular clauses are simple syntactic structures. They consist minimally of a (referential) NP as subject and a (non-verbal) predicate which, in many languages though not always, are linked by a copular verb, prototypically a form of be – thus, sentences of the form A is B. Copular clauses are cross-linguistically the most common type of non-verbal predication (Creissels et al. 2025: 16).
Although they have been discussed extensively from both a syntactic and semantic perspective, there are still many unresolved issues, such as agreement properties or the meaning of the copula (Den Dikken & O’Neill 2017). However, rather than discussing unanswered questions of copular constructions beyond dispute, we focus on constructions that cannot be clearly classified as copular, i.e. “kopulaverdächtige Konstruktionen” (‘constructions suspected of being copular’; Geist & Rothstein 2007: 227). Obviously, the question of what constitutes a prototypical copular construction and what are (im-)possible deviations, varies greatly across languages. Atypical copular properties may, among other things, relate to the following aspects:

Constructions with an unexpected absence or presence of the copula

Atypical copular verbs

Locative PP predicates vs. adverbials (Ich bin im Kino ‘I am at the cinema’)

Locative PP vs. directional PP predicates (Ich bin ins Kino lit.: I am to the cinema, ‘I am off to the cinema’)

Verbal predicates such as the absentive (Ich bin joggen ‘I am off running’) and adjectival passives

By examining which of these constructions can actually be regarded as copular and which cannot, we aim at better understanding copular constructions in general. Contributions on these and other topics and on any language are welcome. We specifically welcome research from different methodological backgrounds (e.g., theoretical linguistic, corpus linguistic, psycholinguistic).

Melanie Hobich; Nelli Keresova (beide Universität Frankfurt)

There is no single definition of what language contact is. Language contact(s) exist in a diffuse form at various levels – from the individual level of a bilingual person to the global level of a world society, resulting in a heterogeneity in the field of contact linguistics (cf. Bidese 2023, 2). Language contact can be studied by different (sub)disciplines and from different perspectives. Researchers have pointed out that despite the enormous interest that the field has attracted, there is still no consistent methodology developed for the investigation of language contact (cf. Bidese 2023).
Why should we look at language contact? As Grant (2020:2) points out, it is impossible to look at a language in isolation: “there has probably never been, nor is, nor ever will be, a linguistic system that has not been modified in some way by the incorporation of elements from at least one other linguistic system.”
In order to fully understand the principles guiding language change in general, it is therefore necessary to look at how linguistic contact may influence a language system. This workshop addresses questions w.r.t. how best to approach the study of contact-induced language change.
Our aim is to discuss and provide new empirical and theoretical insights on the concept of language contact from a diachronic and methodological perspective. Abstract submissions to the AG can focus on one of the following issues, among others:

How do we get comparable and reproducible data on morpho-syntactic change?

What methods failed? What methods worked?

Under what language-internal and/or language-external conditions can language contact trigger a morpho-syntactic change and under what conditions not (e.g., structural (dis)similarity, forms of bilingualism)?

Are certain syntactic features more likely to undergo a contact-induced change?

In what forms can morpho-syntactic contact-induced language change appear (e.g., borrowing of functional elements, transfer of pattern)?

Jens Hopperdietzel (Universität Köln); Jozina Vander Klok (Humboldt-Universität Berlin); András Bárány (University of Edinburgh)

The interaction between the (morpho)syntactic realization of event participants and their dis-course status is a central topic in linguistic research. Currently, we have a good understanding of how alternations in the expression of core arguments influence their pragmatic status, e.g. backgrounding of oblique/prepositional coding in passive. For applicatives, which prototypically promote oblique event participants (e.g. instruments) to core argument functions, the opposite effect of discourse foregrounding has been described (Peterson 2007). However, recent cross-linguistic studies reveal that applicativization does not necessarily coincide with ar-gument promotion, i.e. oblique/prepositional coding can be maintained (Marten & Mous 2017), questioning the pragmatic function of applicative alternations.
This workshop zooms in on the pragmatic effects of such alternation, taking typological and formal perspectives into account. Selected contributions may relate to the following specific questions: (i) What is the pragmatic function of alternations within applicative constructions (e.g. topic/focus, contrast, etc.) within and across languages? (ii) How does the syntactic status of oblique/prepositional participants interact with other syntacto-pragmatic processes (e.g. topicalization, question-formation; cf. Holmberg 2019)? (iii) How productive are such alterna-tions within and across languages (e.g., do they apply across the board or are there semantic restrictions)? Taking an inclusive view, closely related phenomena in languages with uncoded ditransitive alternations are also welcome, such as differential (indirect) object marking in Alemannic German, indirect object clitic doubling in Romance or (case/agreement) alternations.

https://dgfs.de/de/assets/content/Dokumente/Ethikkommission/hinweise.pdf

März 2027 in Jena statt.
